Intervention Presentation and Capstone Video Reflection

The paper is my reflection of completing the project that identifies some of the key activities and lessons I acquired from the practice. The reflection touches on various aspects, including examining how the clients (Mary and her family) felt about the intervention, incorporation of EBP and peer-reviewed literature, and level of using technology in the practice. Furthermore, the paper addresses the effects of health policy in planning and implementation on completing the project, as well as elaborates on whether the final outcomes match predicted results. The reflection also shows how much I have grown from undertaking the course, and how this is likely to impact on my practice as a health care practitioner. Reading the reflection offers clear overview regarding key events and happenings while completing the capstone project.

Assessing Contribution of the Intervention to the Patient

Mary who suffers from gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and her family are happy that the proposed intervention had positive effects in managing the condition. Both the patient and her family agree that the prescribed insulin therapy, which requires that Mary receives one daily injection of insulin lispro two injections of insulin aspart were instrumental in managing the condition particularly at her pregnant condition (Lawrence et al., 2019). In addition to the pharmacological intervention approach, the clients are happy with the information they received regarding how they can manage the condition. Lawrence et al. (2019) inform that lack of knowledge on GDM is one of the primary reasons why many women develop severe effects associated with the condition. Thus, Mary is happy that the information she received about the condition and how to live with it is instrumental in helping her avoid adverse effects.

The applied intervention enhances the patient in many aspects. First, the intervention helps to avoid some of the adverse effects associated with GDM such as intrauterine death, intrauterine distress, and premature delivery among others. The intervention also enhances the patient because it saves her from developing preeclampsia and high blood pressure. Another way in which the intervention enhances the patient is that it equips her with information that she can apply to manage the condition even in the absence of a health care practitioner.

Use of Evidence and Peer-Reviewed Literature

The practice relied on the guidance of the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP), which played fundamental functions in promoting successful implementation of the intervention. EBP acknowledges that scientific evidence alone is not adequate to steer decision-making (Li et al., 2019). Consequently, I had to seek other ways of dealing with the problem, including offering effective leadership throughout the intervention and maintaining clear communication with the client. Moreover, EBP directs that hierarchies exist within various sources of evidence, which makes it necessary for interveners to keenly select the sources that they use to gather instruction and guidelines. In addition to relying on the principles of EBP, I referred to different peer-reviewed literature that issued valuable information that helped to improve the practice. I identified the literature carefully to ensure that they are not prone to errors and that they give clear information about the study area. Incorporating the literature in the practice provided proof to some queries that would be difficult to understand without such sources of evidence.

Level of Leveraging Health Care Technology

Technology is increasingly transforming healthcare practice and every practitioner should find ways to incorporate emerging innovations in their practice. I used electronic health records (EHR) to keep and retrieve the patient’s health records, which presented many benefits. For example, using EHR presented an opportunity to retrieve information very fast, thus reducing on the waiting time. Another benefit of EHR is that it helps to avoid loss of vital data, which could result in unwanted circumstances (Meetoo, 2018). In addition to EHR, I communicate with the client via digital platforms such as social media that offers a wider option for practitioners and clients who seek to communicate different ideas using effective and appealing techniques. Incorporating technology in the practice made work easier and quicker.

Nevertheless, there is great opportunity to improve the use of technology in healthcare practice going forward. More institutions are providing training on how to use technology in healthcare and more practitioners are enlisting for these courses, thereby presenting a better chance to improve health care technology going forward (Meetoo, 2018). Another reason why health care technology is more likely to be applicable in future is that innovators continue creating new ideas that impact health care practice.

Influence of Health Policy in Planning and Implementation of the Capstone Project

I knew that I had to consider health policy and its implementation when completing the project as a baccalaureate-prepared nurse. I performed everything in accordance with health policies to avoid contravening my profession and what it requires. One particular area where adhering to health policy became handy was in the interaction with the patient. I followed all ethical guidelines and followed all steps as required of a medical practitioner. I know that it is unexpected of a health practitioner, especially one who works as a baccalaureate-prepared nurse to violate policies because this would be a dishonor to the profession.

Whether Project Outcomes Match Initial Predictions

The outcomes of the project are in accordance and consistent with initial predictions although some areas did not turn out as expected. One area that worked as expected is the interaction with the client. The process surpassed expectation because the client was satisfied with the process and the outcome. However, some research took unnecessarily long because it was necessary to examine each work appropriately before picking out key and helpful ideas. The intervention can be adopted as best practice because it relies on stipulated guidelines that govern nursing practice. Moreover, it is possible to apply the intervention in other similar cases other than this specific setting because it follows the clinical guidelines that guide practitioners when handling such scenarios.

Personal and Professional Growth

I have recorded significant growth from completing the capstone project that I believe will help me in my career. One area that I have made tremendous growth after completing the project is in the application of ethical guidelines and standards. I now appreciate the need to apply the key ethical theories of nursing that guide clinicians in their everyday practice. For example, I am now able to apply the concept of autonomy quite effectively when serving as a health worker. Autonomy is a fundamental guideline of professional medical ethics and it refers to allowing patients to make decisions that they think suit them or may impact on their well-being (Page, 2017). Moreover, I now have the capacity to deploy the ethical principle of justice, which means treating the patient fairly and impartially. Besides, I have gained much information regarding how to protect the patient from harm while ensuring they are safe as directed by the principle of nonmaleficence (Page, 2017). The ethical principle dictates that health workers should not cause injury to their patients. Besides developing my capacity to use ethical guidelines, I have achieved significant progress in other areas, which makes me proud of completing the project. For example, I have gained valuable communication skills that I may use during service delivery and in other settings where effective communication is paramount. Therefore, I regard the project as having contributed to my professional and personal growth significantly.

Conclusion

The reflection provides critical information regarding what transpired during the capstone project. It illustrates how Mary and her family were contented with the intervention and how they feel that the information they acquired help them to manage the condition quite effectively. The paper shows that the completion of the project followed EBP and collected helpful information from peer-reviewed literature. The study illustrates that I use health care technology to improve how I interact with my clients and how the approach plays fundamental roles in improving service delivery. Health policy proves to be a critical aspect in the practice because it helps to provide services to the client in accordance with formulated guidelines. Overall, the project outcomes comply with initial predictions because it turns out that the client gets the services she requires and other aspects of the project also progressed effectively. Completing the project has equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge that I know will continue to influence how I serve patients with similar problems or other health-related issues.
