Bend it like Beckham
Bend it like Beckham is a comedy that casts two ambitious eighteen-year-old girls that have a passion for specializing in football as a career. The main character Jessminder Bhamra (Jess) is determined to pursue football as a profession, the same way her role model David Beckham did. Jess has a natural talent though she only plays in the neighborhood with her male friends. One day, Juliette Paxton (Jules) who plays for Hounslow Harriers spots her and asks Jess to join the team. Although Joe is hesitant in letting a new player join the team, he soon realizes that Jess has amazing football skills.
The main concern is that the traditions of “Punjabi” do not allow girls to play football. Jess parents are against Jess’s decision to pursue professional football on the same account. Despite these obstacles, Jess is still determined to play in Jules’ team regardless of her parents’ decision. Jules is facing the same problem because her mother does not want her to play much football. Jules’ mother wants her daughter to be more feminine because football is a game for boys. The coach of the team (Joe) has a responsibility to help these girls to try to achieve their goals.
The point where the team goes to a trip in Germany, Jess falls in love with Joe when they are out clubbing. At the same time, Jules, who had an attraction towards Joe, nearly finds the two sharing a kiss. Later on, Jess meets Jules to fix their relationship, but MrsPaxton, hears their talk and misjudges the situation, thinking that Jess and Jules are lesbians. In the build up to the final match that was to be watched by a scout, the event clashes with the wedding of Pinky (Jess sister). Joe tries to persuade Mr. Bhamra into allowing Jess to play but Mr.Bhamra declines, claiming that he was once discriminated when he was younger in playing sport.
The game proceeds while Jess is at her sister’s wedding, and she finds it hard to cope with the situation. Eventually, Tony manages to convince Mr. Bhamra to allow Jess join the team when her team was already trailing with sixty minutes still to play. She joins the team, and the score is level. After some minutes, the referee gives Jess a free kick that is to be scored by making the ball to curve and go round her opponents into the goal. Jess bends the ball and goal gives Harries victory. Jess and Jules get scholarship at Santa Clara.
When Mrs.Praxton and Jules get to the wedding, Mrs. Paxton, shouts at Jess and accuses her of being a lesbian and a hypocrite. Jess remains quite, and she does not tell her parents that she has a scholarship. However, Tony steps to lie that he will be engaged to Jess only if Jess is given a chance to play football in any college of her choice. This made Jess to say the truth. Thereafter,Mr. Bhamra gave her the permission to go to college so that she does not suffer as he did.
At the time when Jess and Jules were about to live for California, Joe arrives at the airport and admits to Jess that he had fallen for her. They kiss and submit to start a relationship then they will inform their parents when Jess comes back. Luckily, David Beckham is coincidentally at the same airport, giving Jess a chance to see him face to face. The two girls then leave to pursue their football career. After some time, the parents are given a team photo, which show Pinky pregnant. At the same time, Mr. Bhamra and Joe have started to play cricket together.
