Hairspray the movie

Choose one of the following topics and write a 500 – 750 word essay:

1. Examine one of the themes in Hairspray (i.e. peer pressure, weight/body image, racism, or?). Ask yourself questions like: What does the title mean? How is the audience introduced to the theme? What scenes develop the theme and how?

2. Choose one of the main characters and examine how his or her role is defined by the historical period – then compare his or her actions to current roles in society. Do you think the character may have acted differently today? Why or why not?

3. Examine the setting of the play. Where is the play set? What kind of mood does the setting create and how does it create that mood? How and why is the setting important?

Use MLA format and be sure to include a works cited page.
