How do you define aging?

Aging is the gradual change that occurs over time, caused by growth. It is a continuous process, which begins from birth until death. Sometimes aging is defined as the developmental stages of growing old or maturing of an organism. Every individual grows older and experiences the aging process effects. In human beings, ageing involves a multidimensional physical, psychological and social process of change. Some aspects of ageing are associated with time. Studies indicated that ageing is an essential aspect of all beings. This is because it does not only involve biological changes but also reflects on other things such as cultural and communal conventions (Duffy and Atwater, 2001).

What is your experience of the aging process?

My aging experience can be reflected from the birth period up to the present situation of my adulthood. I have realized that ageing is a continuous process and everyone has to undergo the said process. From my childhood, I developed cognitive skills, which enabled me imitate and learn about new things surrounding me. At each stage of development, I faced cognitive, psychological and emotional sets of issues. In my adolescent stage, I experienced many things including negative stereotypes about my ageing. I started developing physical uniqueness in my body during this stage. I became shy most of the time because of my unique body, which turned out to be a unique experience for everyone. As I grew up, I became open-minded and was always willing to attempt new experiences in my life. Thomas (2010) points out that aging has barriers, which include negative and positive stereotypes and that vulnerabilities exists no matter the age of an individual. I remember there is a period when I became sick for one month, and I could not perform my duties because of prolonged sickness. That is when I realized that diseases sometimes could affect the aging process. I am now an adult and I have experienced many things in my adult stage including educational experience and certain responsibilities such as caring for the old. I have a positive view about my life and I have freedom to do certain things, which I could not do when I was young.

Reflect on your personal concept of the aging process

            The aging process takes a gradual period and it is notable in every stage of development. In my personal life, I have noticed that I have reached the peak of physical performance and ability at my adult stage. The rate at which I experience life changes at the present depends on the choice of lifestyles and the surrounding environment. Thomas (2010) comments that changes arising from our lifestyle behaviors and diseases are not taken as part of the ordinary aging. The aging process has a lot to do with the way I reflect on my personal beliefs and my personal experiences with others. From my personal reflection, ageing is performing everything that one wants to do without being affected by other influences.

Reflect upon your own aging and explain its meaning for you

            From my own aging experience, I can state that aging is meaningful to my life. This is because as I keep on growing, I experience multiple changes in my life. The way I handle diverse changes everyday is the key to ageing. Aging is crucial because it makes us move from one stage to another and makes us discover the new things in life. For instance, I have explored and discovered many things in my adulthood than when I was young. In addition, staying physically and socially active has enabled me to experience healthy aging. This is because healthy ageing makes one stronger and energetic. The way I relate to friends, family and the loved ones determines my aging period and this has enabled me to preserve my dignity making my aging process meaningful to me.
