Discussions

Hello, what I need is for you to pose one question from each book and respond to one discussion question in three sections. For a total of six questions created and three responses.

Books:

1.) Juvenile Delinquency. Donald J. Shoemaker. 2009. Rowman and Littlefield Publishers Inc.
ISBN #978-0-7425-4707-0

2.) All God’s Children: The Bosket Family and the American Tradition of Violence. Fox Butterfield. 2008. Vintage.
ISBN #978-0-307-28033-6

(Part #1)

Create 1 question from the book Juvenile Delinquency from Chapter 4.

Also Create 1 question from the book All God’s Children from Chapter 5,6,& 7.

Then respond to this question:

Lombroso states that people are born criminals because they were placed lower on the evolutionary chart when they were other people. He then later states that 1/3 are born into it and the rest are classified as insane. Do you think people are born criminals (Nature) or is it just the way the were raised (Nurture)?

(Part #2)

Create 1 question from the book Juvenile Delinquency from Chapter 5,6, & 10.

Also Create 1 question from the book All God’s Children from Chapter 8,9,10, & 11.

Then respond to this question:

Abandonment. That is what James, Butch and Willie felt as a result of having no father around. All three ended up engaging in repeated deviant behavior. Do you think this is a similar problem with absent fathers today? Granted not everyone who grows up without their fathers lead a life of crime but do you think this is a large contributing factor in some situations?

(Part #3)

Create 1 question from the book Juvenile Delinquency from Chapter 7,8,10, & 12.

Also Create 1 question from the book All God’s Children from Chapter 12,13, &14.

Then respond to this question:

In chapter 8 of Shoemaker, it highlights that students are placed into classes early on with peers that are the same age. These classes receive instructions and work with each other and experience similar environments and stimuli. Classes move up in age and level together which fosters close group relationships. The reading also notes that this can be the root of groups that turn into gangs, which is a continuing problem in many schools.

Are there any strategies that schools can use to curb gang behavior in this setting? Would possibly rearranging classes or progressing students on an intelligence basis instead of age help or hinder these gang associations? What about the effect on the students?

Thank you,
